Film composer Matthew Margeson (KICK-ASS 2, SKYLINE) scores the biographical British-American sports dramedy EDDIE THE EAGLE directed by Dexter Fletcher (SUNSHINE ON LEITH, WILD BILL) and stars Taron Egerton, Christopher Walken, and Hugh Jackman. To reflect the film set in the 80’s, the composer created a unique synth score for a decade known for its electronic drums and sequencers in synthpop. “In creating this period score, we ended up going on Craigslist and eBay and getting a bunch of old digital synthesizers. I played all of the keyboards, did the programing and synths myself.” Margeson is currently scoring Tim Burton’s MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIARS. EDDIE THE EAGLE opens in theaters on February 26, 2016. The soundtrack from Varèse Sarabande will be released digitally on March 11thand on CD March 25th.
“This is not like any of my previous work,” Margeson states. “I knew it was going to be a fun task from the get-go and it truly was. In addition to the keyboards and synths, we also used drum machines that were widely used in films and music during that time. For the key emotional moments, I wanted to incorporate a more organic sound; guitar, bass, and live woodwinds best represented that.”
Inspired by true events, EDDIE THE EAGLE is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (played by Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. From the producers of KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, EDDIE THE EAGLE is about the loveable underdog with a never say die attitude.
Multi-talented and versatile, Matthew Margeson has composed and arranged music for some of the most memorable films, television shows, and video games of the last 10 years. After attending the Berklee College of Music, he moved to Los Angeles to apprentice with award winning composer Klaus Badelt. Soon after, he joined Remote Control Studios where he has collaborated with composers including Hans Zimmer and Henry Jackman. His first studio feature, Universal’s SKYLINE (2010), led to a nomination for the BSOSPIRIT Revelation Composer Award at the Úbeda Film Music Festival.
